Tips for Conducting Virtual Interviews
With COVID-19 bringing a surprising impact to the economy, many businesses have shifted to a remote environment. The virtual environment has affected many facets of the business infrastructure, including the recruiting process. Virtual interviews are now becoming part of the new “normal.” Here are some virtual interview preparation tips.

- Screening vs Selection: One of the first things to consider is the type of interview you are conducting. Are you screening the employee for a second interview? Or is this a top candidate you’re hoping to select for the open position? This will dictate who should be present, the questions that will be asked, and the preparations needed.
- Technology: Like any virtual meeting, it is imperative to select the appropriate technology to support it. Maybe your company uses Microsoft Teams for most virtual meetings. However, an applicant may not have a Microsoft account or be able to access Teams to participate. Find an easy-to-use platform, such as Zoom or GoToMeeting, where a candidate can quickly join the meeting without a subscription or paying for the service.
- Legal Considerations: As you would with in-person interviews, it is important to consider federal and state laws, as well as remote-specific laws and regulations. For example, there are some laws that require employers to obtain consent before recording an interview. Just like the in-person interview process, employers should consult with legal counsel to ensure all legal concerns are addressed before the interview takes place.
- Interview and Evaluation Checklists: Preparing an interview and evaluation checklist can help guide the interview and evaluation with the potential candidate. Making a general list of what you’re looking for in a candidate, such as education, technical skills, characteristics, and cultural fit can help guide you in asking the right questions, preparing you to observe certain behaviors, and other relevant factors pertinent to the job requirements.
