As businesses re-open and safety orders are lifted, businesses may look to re-evaluating travel options for business-related purposes. While most businesses are able to move their meetings and trainings to virtual environments, business leaders will likely agree that in-person meetings and trainings are more effective. In the move towards preparing employees for business travel, here are some important details worth considering.
Transportation. Though flying is typically an ideal mean of transportation, traveling within state or to a nearby state can be done via car or public transportation. For example, if traveling from Michigan to Ohio, renting a car can be cheaper and present fewer health risks than flying. Rental car providers, such as Avis Budget Group have implemented healthy and safety practices per CDC recommendations to ensure the safety of their staff and customers. If in a larger metropolitan area, public transportation is also an effective, safer vehicle for travel.
Destination. While business travel may resume, businesses are encouraged to comply with state and federal regulations post-COVID-19. For example, stay at home orders may permit travel within the United States, but prohibit business travel outside of the country. As the nation recovers in all facets post-COVID-19, international may open but with limitations and/or strict regulations. These limitations and restrictions may include quarantine periods after returning from a trip, restrictions on travel to specific countries or regions, and health and safety checks pre- and post-travel.
Affordability. Many travelers may have noticed that for the most part airline prices have declined, creating an incentive and opportunity to travel. However, businesses likely sustained financial impacts resulting from COVID-19. While it may be difficult to reimburse travel funds, there are plenty of alternative methods of travel reimbursement for employees. For example, offering discounts on amenities, such as rewards programs for hotels and transportation, can alleviate travel expenses.
Communication. Travelers are likely receiving communications regarding new travel policies and regulations post-COVID, which should also be addressed by employers. Businesses should be providing regular updates regarding travel and providing appropriate resources and information to keep employees informed.
