There’s more to HR than just filling out new hire or termination paperwork, mediating an employee disagreement, or updating the employee handbook. The job is much more complex than most people probably imagine. Role-based certifications, like those available for HR professionals, are available for professionals looking to not only boost their resume but advance their career, also. Voluntary certifications can highlight an employee’s professional expertise and credibility in their field and within the organization.
Here are some of the top certifications and potential benefits they could have on your career.
SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)
The SHRM certifications will help identify you as an HR expert and leader in your field. These certifications, according to the SHRM website, are “accredited by the Buros Center for Testing, asserting that the HR credentials meet the highest standards in testing.” The competency-based certification programs are directly related to realistic on-the-job scenarios/situations, making the content and resulting certification applicable in any job or career.
Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD)
Offered by the Association for Talent Development (ATD), this certification is “designed for talent development professionals who are in the early part of their careers or whose professional roles and aspirations are focused on a few areas of expertise.” Those focus areas include instructional design, training delivery, and learning technologies. As an HR professional, if you are looking to obtain the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) certification, this is one of the recommended stepping-stones to achieving that goal.
Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
The HR Certification Institute recommends this certification for HR professionals who are looking to demonstrate their “mastery of technical and operational aspects of HR management, including U.S. laws and regulations.” Good for three years after testing, the PHR certification is best suited for HR professionals who have at least one year of experience in a professional HR position and have at least a high school diploma or better.
